CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Redshirt freshman quarterback Eric Boatwright was nine for 16 in the air for 89 yards and two interceptions as the Boston College football team held its final scrimmage of the preseason on Thursday afternoon. A number of Eagle players missed the scrimmage, but head coach Tom O'Brien said they were held out for precautionary reasons.
"I think this team wants to be good and has worked hard in camp," says O'Brien, whose team opens the season on Sept. 1 at home against West Virginia at 12:00 p.m. on ABC regional television. "We are going to have to play well to beat West Virginia."
Freshman quarterback Quinton Porter was seven of 15 in the air for 67 yards and an interception, while classmate Ray Henderson was one for seven for nine yards.
Sophomore Derrick Knight was the leading rusher in the scrimmage with 20 carries for 91 yards while sophomore Greg Toal had 12 carries for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Junior linebacker Marco Williams led the way with 12 tackles while junior safety Doug Bessette had nine. Four players, Curtis Bolden, Paul Cook, Scott Bradley and Antonio Garay, each had eight tackles while Doug Goodin, Peter Shean and Sean Guthrie each had an interception.
"Our offensive line has really improved during camp and they are hanging in there," says O'Brien. "That is a function of the camp. They are playing against a very good front four on defense everyday.
"We are a little tired and sluggish and we need to get healthy and get our legs back. We will begin to put our two-deep together tonight and start to work on West Virginia on Saturday."
