NEWTON, Mass. - The Boston College men's soccer team proved that youthful experience can win games as several prominent underclassmen contributed in the team's 3-1 exhibition win over the FC Greater Boston Eagles on Wednesday night at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
BC controlled play throughout the game while starting seven players classified as freshmen or sophomores. Sophomore Adam Pfeifer gave BC a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute as he collected a cross-field pass in front of the net for the score. Freshmen Bill Arnault sent a pass down the left wing to a streaking Casey Schmidt, who fed Pfeifer alone at the net's doorstep.
The Eagles team responded two minutes later with the equalizer as a team member intercepted a BC pass and pocketed a goal on the right post through traffic.
Pfeifer stuck again in the 38th minute as Ramon Smith set him up for his second goal of the game. Smith came down the right wing and passed off to Pfeifer in the center of the field just above the goal box. After several quick moves around the defenders, he scored to the left lower corner of the net.
Senior Chris Cleary gave BC a two-goal lead just after the start of the second half as he took a wide pass to the left from Arnault. He chipped the ball over the surging keeper and into the far right corner of the net for the goal.
BC out-shot the Eagles 19-7 as junior goalkeeper Danny Caruso made four saves in the win. The FC Eagles team is coached by former BC assistant coach Dave Kulik.
Boston College will play one final exhibition game on Saturday, Aug. 25 against New Hampshire at 3 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field before officially beginning the 2001 season on Friday, Aug. 31 against Syracuse at home at 3 p.m.
