Rowing Competes At The Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA - The Boston College women's rowing team competed at the two day Dad Vail Regatta, on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12, on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, Pa. Winning one gold medal and one silver medal, Boston College tied for third for the points trophy.
Winning the women's heavy weight eight, the first varsity crew rowed a 7:06.3. Concerned with Villanova going into the finals, the Eagles jumped out to an early lead and coasted to their first gold medal at the Dad Vail. To begin the regatta, the Eagles won their opening heat, rowing a 6:53.0. In the semifinals, the crew took an early lead over Binghamton and raced a good race, leading them to the finals. Rowing in the first varsity crew was Mary Cooley in the stroke seat followed by Kristin Henny, Alex Kazanovicz, Andrea Achimovic, Kristin Cary, Ellie Gregory, Amelia Stephens and Terry Cojohn in the bow seat. The coxswain was Natalie Alderete.
Taking second in the women's junior varsity eight, the second varsity crew won the silver medal with a time of 7:17.1. Rowing an impressive race, the Eagles were behind eventual winners, Central Florida, from the start. Rowing hard and well, the crew came within three feet of the lead but it just wasn't enough. In their opening race, the crew took a comfortable lead, which they refused to relinquish, winning easily over Drexel and Purdue. The crew was stroked by Lucia Romeo followed by Julie Todhunter, Katie Miller, Martha Tierney, Cate Boron, Claire Dennison, Kelly Griffin and Lauren Lehane in the bow seat. The coxswain was Vicky Haley.
Rowing an 8:00.6, the varsity four won their opening heat advancing to the semifinals. Taking fourth in the semifinals, the crew finished closely behind Fordham and George Mason and Rochester Institute of Technology. The crew was rowed by Ellen Gallagher in the stroke seat, Tiana Morrison in the three seat, Kate McDonough in the two seat and Kim Donohue in the bow seat. Bridgette Stewart was the coxswain.
To open the weekend the novice eight won their heat by three seconds, advancing to the semifinals. Rowing a hard race in the semifinals, the crew missed the finals by a heartbreaking 1.8 seconds, taking third place. Rowing in the stroke seat was Anne Nelson followed by Katie Staiken, Katie Meehan, Megan Olmstead, Holly Rothe, Andrea Overall, Kim Rothrock and Melissa Irving in the bow seat. Beth McGrimley was the coxswain.
In the women's first novice four, Boston College took second place with a 9:03.01. Racing very well in the semifinals, the crew took 5th place. Rowing in the stroke seat was Jess Walker followed by Brianne Moskovitz in the three seat, Jetta Sandin in the two seat and Lindsay Williamson in the bow seat. The coxswain was Lauren Ippolito.
Winning the women's points trophy was Delaware with 24 points. Second was Villanova with 18. Tied for third with 17 points were Boston College, Purdue and Central Florida.
The Boston College women's rowing team concluded their first season as a varsity sport with the most successful year of the program.
