Hockey Players Earn New England Hockey Writers Awards

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The New England Hockey Writers Association announced its annual awards last week, including several Boston College players. The award winners will be honored at a banquet on April 11.
Senior captain Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y.) earned two awards, the Leonard Fowle Award as New England's Most Valuable Player and the Herb Gallagher Award as the region's outstanding forward. He closed his stellar collegiate career as a four-time All-American and a three-time Hobey Baker Award finalist. He is second in career scoring at Boston College with 232 points, including a 54-point campaign this season.
Senior forward Mike Lephart (Niskayuna, N.Y.) earned the Frank Jones Award as New England's outstanding defensive forward. Earlier this season he earned HOCKEY EAST's Best Defensive Forward award. He finished his career at Boston College with 121 points, including a career-high 34-point effort this season.
Freshman forward Chuck Kobasew (Osoyoos, British Columbia) added another rookie award as he was honored as the George Carens Award as New England's rookie of the Year. He was also selected as HOCKEY EAST's Rookie of the Year. In two postseason tournaments, Kobasew was named the most valuable player of both the HOCKEY EAST and NCAA Frozen Four tournaments. In his first season at the Heights, he collected 49 points (27 goals and 22 assists) and registered 10 game-winning goals to lead the nation.
Boston College won the NCAA Championship, defeating North Dakota, 3-2 in overtime, on Saturday, April 7 in Albany, N.Y. The Eagles finished the season with a school record 33 wins and a 33-8-2 overall record. The team captured the Beanpot and the HOCKEY EAST regular season and tournament crowns earlier this season.
