PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Boston College softball team split its BIG EAST doubleheader with Pittsburgh, dropping the first game 2-1 before coming back in the second to win 4-0. Summer Jarratt and Jen Asbury provided the offense as each knocked out a home run on the day.
In the first game, Jarratt gave BC a 1-0 lead in the game's first at-bat as she homered over the right center field fence. It was her first round-tripper of the 2001 season. The Eagles carried the lead into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Panthers posted two runs in the frame. Back-to-back doubles plated two Pittsburgh players as the Panthers won on the 2-1 score.
Tekae Malandris pitched a complete game, going six innings allowing both runs on six hits. She struck out five and only walked one batter. Pittsburgh's Nikki Gasti pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts for the win.
In the nightcap, Kim Ryan pitched the complete game one-hit shutout, striking out eight. BC posted a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Jacqui Goodchild walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a ground out. With the open base, Asbury walked and two batters later, Alison Erbig singled to load the bases. An error by the Panthers' second baseman on Erin Mackey's hit brought home Goodchild, but Asbury was thrown out at the plate on the scoring attempt.
The Eagles exploded in the top of the seventh for three runs. With one out, Goodchild singled down the left field line and Cara Blumfield doubled to left center. Asbury stepped in and bounced on a pitch for a three-run home run to right field. The home run was the fourth of the season for Asbury.
The Panthers tried to rally in the bottom half of the inning and broke up Ryan's no-hit bid as the right fielder singled to left in the first at-bat. But the Eagles responded and Ryan sat down the last three batters, striking out the final batter, for the win.
With the split, the Eagles improved to 26-24 overall and 7-13 in BIG EAST games. BC will face No. 22 Massachusetts on Tuesday, May 1 in a single game at Shea Field at 3 p.m.
