CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Connecticut softball team swept a pair of BIG EAST games from Boston College, 1-0 and 3-2, on Shea Field on Saturday. Barbara Cook pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game, while Meghan Biddle allowed just four hits in the second contest.
The Huskies scored their only run in the first game in the third inning as Mandy Simjin brought in a run on a ground out. Jessica Yanosy reached on an infield single, then Nicole Dubovic doubled her over to third where she scored on Simjin's at-bat.
In the bottom of the third, BC had runners on second and third with no outs, but Cook was able to strike out two of her 10 batters and force another batter into a ground out to preserve the lead.
Tekae Malandris pitched the complete game for the Eagles, allowing just four hits and striking out five. The loss was her fourth 1-0 loss of the season and the eighth one-run loss on the year.
In the second game, BC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Cara Blumfield drew a walk and Jen Asbury singled up the middle to move Blumfield over. Lisa Fischer stepped up and drove in Blumfield with a single to left field.
The Eagles held the lead until the fourth inning when UConn posted three runs to take the 3-1 lead. Blumfield made it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth, belting her 11th home run of the season over the left field fence. Biddle ended the threat by striking out the last two batters to end the inning with the 3-2 lead.
Kimberly Ryan started the game and pitched 3.2 innings, striking out five and allowing three runs on five hits. Malandris completed the game with three strikeouts and one hit.
BC dropped to 22-20 on the season and 5-9 in BIG EAST play. UConn moved to 21-18 and 6-4 in league games.
The Eagles will next face Syracuse in a league doubleheader on Sunday, April 22, at noon at Shea Field.
