CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball split is home-opening series with BIG EAST rival Rutgers, losing 1-0 in the first game and winning 8-2 in the second, Saturday afternoon at Shea Field.
In the first game, Rutgers posted its lone run in the fourth inning. Eagle starter Tekae Malandris walked Brittney Neer to open the inning, who advanced to second on a fielder's choice. After a Dana Komar sacrafice that moved both runners over, Neer scored when Megan Antonucci flied out to right field.
The Eagle mounted a comeback in the sixth. With two outs, Jacqui Goodchild doubled and Summer Jarratt walked. Cara Blumfield was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Jen Perrotta ended the rally with a fly-out to right field. Goodchild had the Eagles' only hit on the day.
Malandris pitched the complete game, striking out five, while allowing just one hit and one run. Her Scarlet Knight counterpart, Leah Black, also allowed just one hit and struck out four for the complete game shutout.
In the nightcap, Rutgers opened the scoring in the top of the first when Antonucci homered in Meaghan Asselta for a 2-0 Rutgers lead. BC recovered in the bottom of the frame with three runs. Alison Erbig started with a single, followed by Goodchild's single to the shortstop. Blumfield grounded out to short, but Erbig came home on the throw to first. Perrotta stepped up next and singled in Goodchild on hit to center field. Jennifer Asbury doubled in Perrotta and the Eagles closed the inning ahead 3-2.
In the bottom of the third, BC added another run for a 4-2 lead. Jarratt scored as Asbury singled to center.
The Eagles decided the game in the sixth, plating four runners for a 8-2 win. Erbig singled with two outs, followed by a Goodchild single. Erbig stole third base and after Jarratt singled, came home for the score. Blumfield stepped to the plate with two on and belted the first Eagle homerun at Shea Field this season. It was her team-leading sixth homerun of the season.
Five Eagles registered a multiple-hit game. Goodchild went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Jarratt went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. Erbig (two runs) and Blumfield (four RBI) each went 2-for-4, while Asbury went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Brooke Shull pitched the complete game, allowing two runs on two hits. She struck out five batters in seven innings.
BC moved to 16-12 on the season and 1-3 in BIG EAST play with the split. Rutgers moved to 11-10 overall and 1-1 in league games.
The Eagles will next face Villanova in a BIG EAST doubleheader on Sunday, April 1 starting at noon on Shea Field.
