KENOHSA, Wisc. - The NCAA Division I Fencing Championships took place from Thursday, March 22nd to Sunday, March 25 at the University of Wisconisn-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Representing Boston College at the event were freshman foilist Paul Taylor and senior epeeist Regina Lennox. Both earned invitations to the Championships as a result of the regular season dual meet records and their performance at the Regional Tournament on March 11.
Taylor placed 18th in the men's foil competition with eight victories while Lennox earned a 22nd place finish in the women's epee competition. Lennox had five victories. Both the men's foil and women's epee events consisted of a field of 24 fencers. Taylor and Lennox's 13 combined victories earned Boston College a 23rd place team finish out of 29 schools.
St. John's University won the NCAA Fencing Championships after leading the team standings since the first day of competition. St. John's tallied an impressive 180 victories over the four days of competition. In second place, claiming the silver medal, was Pennsylvania State University. Penn State had 172 victores overall. Notre Dame University claimed the bronze medal with 153 total victories.
In men's sabre, St. John's claimed the top two spots with Ivan Lee and Keeth Smart winning the gold and silver medals, respectively. Wayne State's Jakub Krochmalski took the bronze medal in the men's sabre event. The men's foil competition saw Columbia's William Jed Dupree take the gold medal, Nontapat Panchan of Penn State take the silver and Stanford's Felix Reichling claim the bronze medal. In men's epee, Soren Thompson of Princeton took first place, Penn State's Adam Wiercioch took second and Jan Viviani of Notre Dame claimed the bronze medal.
On the women's side, Yale University's Sada Jacobson won the gold medal in women's sabre, St. John's Marisa Mustilli took second place honors and Caroline Purcell of M.I.T. took third place. In the foil competition, Stanford's Iris Zimmermann won gold medal honors, Marta Grochal of Penn State took the silver medal and Princeton's Mindy Rostal took third place honors. Finally, in women's epee, Emese Takacs and Arlene Stevens, both of St. John's, took first and second place honors, respectively. Penn State's Stephanie Eim won the bronze medal in this event.

Boston College has completed all regular and post season commitments for the 2000-2001 season. The team will resume competition in November.
