CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College (9-7) snapped its win streak at eight and dropped two games, 10-4 and 4-3, to host Virginia Tech in the 2001 BIG EAST season-opener Sunday, March 18 in Blacksburg, Va. Virginia Tech, which played its first game as a BIG EAST member, improved to 9-8 on the season.
In game two, the Hokies won 4-3 in final inning dramatics when Brad Bauder, who reached base on a fielder's choice, scored the game-winning run on Matt Elfeldt's wild pitch. Bauder advanced bases on a single and walk before scoring. The Eagles got a strong pitching effort from Jed Rogers, who allowed four runs - two earned - on 11 hits in 8.1 innings. Joe Saunders pitched a complete game for the Hokies, surrendering three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Chris Rosado's first hit of the day drove in Joe Kealty to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead after one. Rosado was 3-for-4 and plated all three of the Eagles' runs in that game. The Hokies tied it up before BC reclaimed a one-run advantage again on Rosado's second RBI of the day in the third. The hosts knotted the score once more in the fourth. Rosado led off the sixth inning with a solo home run then Jed English powered his second RBI of the game in the bottom half of that inning for the 3-3 tie.
Catcher Jeff Mackor was 2-for-4 in game two and led all BC batters with two hits in the first game.
Kevin Bice went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Bauder drove in two runs in a perfect 4-for-4 day to lift the Hokies 10-4 over BC in the first game. Virginia Tech scored in four of six innings, collecting 14 hits total. Four Eagle batters drove in runs while Brian Macchi slammed his second home run of the season in the sixth inning. The Eagles threatened in its final at bat. Matt Lederhos scored after leading of the inning with a double, and then BC loaded the bases with one out on a single and two walks. But Virginia Tech pitcher, Chip Runyon, struck out Rosado and Macchi to end the threat and the game.
BC is scheduled to host Rhode Island Wednesday, March 21. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
