Garay Reaches NCAA Wrestling Quarterfinals

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Boston College heavyweight Antonio Garay competed in the NCAA Wrestling Championships held at the University of Iowa from March 15-17, 2001. Garay, Boston College's lone representative at the Championhips, lost in the quarterfinals of the heavyweight division on Friday night. Overall, Boston College tied for 42nd place out out 78 teams.
Garay, a third seed at the tournament, pinned North Carolina's Matt Kenny at 1:48 in the first round of the championship brackets. He proceeded to defeat Lehigh's Shwan Laughlin by a tally of 5-4 in round 2 before losing to Northern Iowa's Paul Hynek 5-3 in the quarterfinals. Garay lost his first match in the wrestle-back brackets to Jake Vercelli by a 3-1 score.
Garay, who is also a member of the Eagle football team, will begin spring practice with the team on Tuesday. Garay, a defensive lineman, missed almost all of last year with a knee injury. He was injured on the first defensive series of the season in the opener at West Virginia.
Winning the 2001 Division I Championship was the University of Minnesota. Minnesota made history, becoming the first team to capture the national title with no one wrestling in the final round. Winning the championships of their respective brackets were the following: Stephen Abas of Fresno State (125 lb), Eric Juergens of Iowa (133 lb), Michael Lightner of Oklahoma (141 pound), Adam Tirapelle of Illinois (149 lb),T.J. Williams of Iowa (157 lb), Donny Pritzlaff of Wisconsin (165 lb), Josh Koscheck of Edinboro (174 lb), Cale Sanerson of Iowa State (184 lb), Mark Munoz of Oklahoma State (197 lb) and John Lockhart of Illinois (heavyweight).
