TALLAHASSE, Fla. - The Boston College softball team improved to 2-1 on the season and moved into the championship round of the 2001 Sunshine State Classic as the tournament's second seed with its 4-0 win over Kent State on Saturday night. Earlier in the day, the Eagles dropped a close 1-0 contest to the nation's 17th ranked team, host Florida State.
In the second game, freshman Jacqui Goodchild and sophomore Cara Blumfield each went 2-for-3 from the plate to lead the Eagles. Both players continued their hot play to start the season. Senior Summer Jarratt knocked in two runners with freshman pinch hitter Elyse Meredith also drove home a run.
Junior Brooke Shull earned the win on six innings of work. She allowed just two hits and registered two strikeouts with no walks. Sophomore Kimberly Ryan came in relief in the seventh and retired all four batters she faced.
In the game against the Seminoles, freshman Tekae Malandris took the mound and allowed only four hits in the full seven innings of work, but FSU's Serita Brookes singled in the game's only run. The Seminoles' Leslie Malerich struck out 12 Eagles, while Malandris sent six back to the dugout.
BC is now 2-1 on the season and will take on Kent State again in a noon game on Sunday. The winner will face the winner of the 10 a.m. FSU/College of Charleston matchup at 2 p.m. at the Seminole Softball Complex.
