
Softball Opens New Season With Win

TALLAHASSE, Fla. - The Boston College softball team opened its 2001 season with a 12-2 win over the College of Charleston in the first round of the Sunshine State Tournament, hosted by Florida State. The top three batters in the starting lineup went 8-for-10 and scored seven of the team's runs.
Sophomore second baseman Cara Blumfield went a perfect 4-for-4 at bat (including a homerun) and brought home four, while scoring three runs. Freshman shortstop Jacqui Goodchild and senior designated player Jennifer Perrotta each went 3-for-4 at bat, while Perrotta knocked in four runs.
BC scored five runs in the first and three in the second and then added four in the third to take the commanding lead. College of Charleston scored one each in the second and third. The Eagles had 14 hits while committing just two errors. The opponents managed only four hits.
Kimberly Ryan, the reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, pitched four innings on the way to the win, allowing four hits and striking out seven. She gave up one earned run in her stint. Junior Brooke Shull came in to pitch the fifth inning, allowing no hits and registering one strikeout, before the game was called.
BC will face host Florida State on Saturday, Feb. 17 in a 2 p.m. game and then take on Kent State in a 6 p.m. contest.
With the win, BC opened the season 1-0, while College of Charleston fell to 2-1.
