Eagles' Baseball Picked Sixth In BIG EAST Preseason Rankings

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Boston College baseball team has been picked to finish sixth in the 2002 preseason poll, the BIG EAST Conference announced on Tuesday. Notre Dame was selected as the favorite to win the championship. The poll was voted on by the league head coaches.
The Eagles, who are coming off a seventh-place finish in the BIG EAST last year, earned 54 points. Notre Dame (98), Rutgers (92), Virginia Tech (78), Seton Hall (69) and St. John's round out the top five.
Senior catcher Jeff Mackor and junior utility player Matt Lederhos were two of 14 players to earn preseason all-BIG EAST honors.
Mackor had an strong 2001 season for head coach Pete Hughes' squad. He finished with a .285 batting average, 49 hits, 10 doubles, six homeruns. 39 runs batted in and a .997 fielding percentage. Lederhos was one of the Eagles top all-around performers in 2001. From a hitting standpoint, he batted .271 with three homeruns and 18 RBIs, while as one of the team's top pitchers, he finished with a 3-3 record in 64.1 innings, 64 strikeouts and a 4.30 earned run average.
Notre Dame senior outfielder Steve Stanley was named preseason player of the year, while Rutgers junior pitcher Bob Brownlie was named preseason pitcher of the year.
Boston College opens the 2002 season on Saturday, February 16, against Delaware State in Davidson, N.C. The time of the game has yet to be announced.
