CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Three Boston College men's soccer players were chosen to the 2001 NSCAA/adidas Division I All-New England third team. Senior captain Chris Cleary and freshmen Bill Arnault and Guy Melamed each earned regional All-American honors for their play this season. Arnault and Melamed were two of the four freshmen selected to the three regional teams.
Cleary (Milton, Mass.) capped his career with a three-goal, six-assists effort in 18 games. He was the team's third-leading scorer and was one of only three players to start all 18 games. He split the season between forward and the midfield. He was also an All-BIG EAST third team selection this year. For his career, Cleary scored 12 goals and added 17 assists for 41 points. He's graduating in eighth-place on the Boston College career scoring list and in a sixth-place tie on the career assist list.
Arnault (Clay, N.Y.), a midfielder, recorded eight assists in his first campaign as an Eagle. A former Under-18 national team member, Arnault also started all 18 games this season. His eight-assist total led the team in 2001 and was the school's highest single-season effort since the 1995 season. He joined Cleary on the All-BIG EAST third team.
Melamed (Nofit, Israel), who split the season between the back and the midfield, started all 17 games he played. He scored two goals and added one assist for five points this season, all coming in BIG EAST games. Melamed is also a former member of Israel's Under-16 and Under-18 national teams.
Boston College closed its season with an 10-8 record after participating in the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row, and fourth overall. The Eagles fell to Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0 in triple overtime, on Nov. 23 in the first round of the College Cup.
