Men's Soccer Places Four On All-BIG EAST Squads

VERNON, Conn. - Four Boston College men's soccer players were selected to All-BIG EAST teams for the 2001 season. The announcements were made on Thursday, Nov. 15 in conjunction with the annual BIG EAST Tournament, this year being held at the University of Connecticut. The three All-BIG EAST teams were selected by a vote of the league's 13 coaching staffs.
Sophomore back Paul Chase (Weymouth, Mass.) was a second team All-BIG EAST selection. In his first year with the Eagles, Chase has started all 14 of the Eagles' games he played. He has recorded one assist on the season while playing strong defense in the back.
Senior forward Chris Cleary (Milton, Mass.) was a third team All-BIG EAST selection. In his final season of competition, Cleary is third on the team in scoring with 12 points. He recorded three goals while collecting six assists. He currently is in eighth place on the Boston College career scoring list with 41 points (12 goals and 17 assists). He is also in a sixth-place tie on the career assist list.
Junior forward Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park, Calif.) was also a third team All-BIG EAST selection. In just four games in league play, Schmidt scored four goals and one assist. He missed six games of the league season with broken bones in his eye area, before returning for the team's regular-season finale at Pittsburgh. At the time of his injury, Schmidt led the BIG EAST in scoring through three games. Playing in only eight games overall this season, he scored five goals and added one assist and is currently fourth on the team in scoring.
Freshman midfielder Bill Arnault (Clay, N.Y.) was the Eagles' final honoree, earning a place on the All-BIG EAST Third Team. Arnault has started all 17 games this season and recorded eight assists, the team's highest single-season total since 1995. Arnault was frequently called on to play a defensive role in the midfield, while also quarterbacking the offense in transition.
The Eagles are currently 10-7 overall after concluding the BIG EAST season with a 6-4 record. The team will await word from on Monday, Nov. 19 whether it received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
