BRONX, N.Y. - The Boston College women's cross country team fell short in its attempt to defend its 2000 BIG EAST Championship as it finished second in the team standings at the 2001 BIG EAST Championship at Van Cortlandt Park. The Eagles finished with a team score of 53, which was 17 points behind conference champion Georgetown University, who finished with 36 points.
After finishing eighth at last year's conference meet, junior Catherine Guiney entered this year's meet as one of the favorites to win - and that is what she did. Guiney took home top honors after finishing with a time of 22:04, which was 23 seconds faster than runner-up finisher Marni Kruppa of Georgetown.
Junior Megan Guiney, who placed second at the 2000 championship, turned in a third-place performance at this year's meet. Guiney turned in a time of 20:33 in the 6,000-meter race.
The final top-10 finisher for Boston College was freshman Maria Cicero. Cicero, who earned a first-place finish in her collegiate meet at the Boston College Invitational, placed fifth at the BIG EAST Championship. Her time of 20:37 was the same as Georgetown's Jill Laurendeau, but Laurendeau crossed the finish line first.
Other scoring finishers for the Eagles were senior Katie Ryan, who finished in 18th spot with a time of 21:24, and junior Julie Spolidoro, who finished 26th with a time of 21:54.
The women's cross country team is back in action on Saturday, November 10, when it runs in the NCAA District I Qualifier at Franklin Park in Boston.
