NEWTON, Mass. - Sophomore Ramon Smith's goal in the 83rd minute broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the 21st-ranked Boston College men's soccer team over Providence College, 3-2, at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. The Eagles improved to 8-3-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the BIG EAST, while Providence fell to 0-9-2 and 0-5-0 in conference play.
PC's Kempes Corbally put the Friars up in the 22nd minute when he converted a free kick from 25 yards out. BC tied the game in the 30th minute when sophomore Adam Pfeifer took a through ball from Chris Cleary and knotted the game. Freshman Bill Arnault was also credited with an assist.
The Friars took a 2-1 lead into halftime when Neville Thompson intercepted a crossing pass from a BC defender at the top of the penalty area and one-timed the ball past Eagle keeper Joe Roos.
Boston College mounted its comeback in the second half, storming out of the intermission. The Eagles out-shot PC 11-4 in the half and kept play in their half of the field until the final minutes.
Freshman Guy Melamed slotted his first career goal in the 65th minute when he scored off a corner. Pat Haggerty and Paul Bourke were credited with assists as the ball touched several Eagles before finding the back of the net.
Smith's goal - from Melamed and Kirt Dorsett - was his first of the season as he streaked down the right wing and placed the ball in the upper left corner of the net past Friar keeper Michael Gruelich.
Roos, seeing his first-ever collegiate action, earned his first win after stopping three Friar shots. Gruelich made six saves in the loss.
Boston College will next travel to Notre Dame for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, October 20. Providence returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Pittsburgh in a 2 p.m. contest.
