BIG EAST Announces Women's Rowing Challenge Site

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The 2001 BIG EAST Women's Rowing Challenge will be contested at Lake Quinsigamond, the league announced today. The inaugural event takes place on Sunday, April 29 and will be hosted by the Quinsigamond Rowing Association (QRA).
The BIG EAST selected Lake Quinsigamond after identifying numerous sites and conferring with several experts in the rowing field. "The conference is excited to add this event and futher develop a relationship with the QRA," Michael Tranghese, BIG EAST Commissioner said. "The league continues to be committed to identifying new programs for women and the inclusion of this challenge creates more opportunities for our female student-athletes."
Located in Worcester, Mass., Lake Quinsigamond hosted four major regattas in 2000, including The Champion International Collegiate Regatta, The New England Rowing Championship, the ECAC's Eastern Sprints and The New England Interscholastic Regatta. The New England Rowing Championship has taken place on Lake Quinsigamond's course every year since 1975.
Nine BIG EAST members sponsor varsity rowing - Boston College, Connecticut, Georgetown, Miami Notre Dame, Rutgers, Syracuse, Villanova and West Virginia.
