CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College forward Brian Gionta earned HOCKEY EAST player of the week honors for the week ending January 21st. With first place on the line between BC and Providence, Gionta led the Eagles to two victories to keep BC on top of the league standings.
Gionta provided all the offense the Eagles needed in a 4-0 blanking of the Friars on Friday, Jan. 19th, scoring a shorthanded, game-winning goal 6:45 into the game. The shorthanded tally was his team-leading fourth of the season, a total that is also tied for the best mark in the country.
The senior concluded the scoring with a goal at 7:35 of the third period. He also assisted on freshman forward Ben Eaves' goal just 13 seconds before the second intermission to make the score 3-0.
The Rochester, N. Y., native duplicated his numbers the following night - a 4-2 victory over Providence - scoring two second-period goals that put the game out of the Friars reach. He again assisted on a goal by linemate Eaves, this one a power-play score early in the second frame to give BC a 2-0 advantage.
Gionta's six-point weekend moved him into the lead in league scoring, one point in front of teammate Krys Kolanos. In 14 league games this season, Gionta has 14 goals and seven assists for 21 points. He currently is tied for third among the league's overall scoring leaders, registering 17 goals and 14 assists for 31 points.
Gionta tallied game-winning goals in both contests, and currently leads the league with four such scores. He also is the conference leader in goals (17), shorthanded goals (4), and is tied for the lead in hat tricks (1).
Gionta earned HOCKEY EAST Player of the Month honors for November.
The second-ranked Eagles (17-6-1, 10-3-1) return to action on Friday, Jan. 26th, in the first game of a weekend HOCKEY EAST series with Maine at Kelley Rink. The Eagles defeated the Black Bears, 7-2, in Orono earlier this season. Game time is 7 p.m.
