Newton, Mass. - Dustin Sheppard's successful penalty kick in the 92nd minute lifted the visiting Rutgers Scarlet Knights over the Boston College Eagles at the Newton Campus Soccer Fields, 1-0, in overtime. In a physical match where Rutgers outshot the Eagles 21-12, the game remained scoreless through regulation. A foul called on the outer edge of the box gave Sheppard the opportunity to win the game on one kick.
Boston College goalkeeper Chris Hamblin made eight saves in the loss, most of which were of the diving style. Rutgers keeper Ricky Zinter made four saves for the win. The shutout was Zinter's third consecutive and third overall on the season. Hamblin kept the Eagles in the game as the home team had trouble mustering offensive rushes.
