Baseball earns BIG EAST Tournament Berth

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Boston College (32-16 overall, 11-9 BIG EAST) earned a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament for the second time in the history of the Eagles' program. BC's only other appearance was in 1991. The Eagles dropped a 7-0 decision to St. John's, then fell 10-9 to Villanova in 10 innings in that tournament.
Rutgers (17-3), Notre Dame (16-6), Seton Hall (15-7) and Connecticut (14-9) have also clinched spots in the tournament to be held May 17-20 at Somerset Ballpark in Bridgewater, N.J.
With three conference games remaining, the Eagles are one BIG EAST win shy of tying the school record (12 in 1991) for conference victories in a season. Nevertheless, the 2000 squad has already distinguished itself as one of the best in the program's 54-year history. BC's team batting average of .332 is ranked 18th in the country (April 30). Senior pitcher Steve Langone is listed fourth nationally with a 1.48 ERA through 67.0 innings. The Reading, Mass. product has also been named to the "Watch List" for the Rotary Smith National Player of the Year award.
In conference action, BC swept three teams (Villanova, St. John's, Georgetown) this season. The Eagles' sweep of Villanova April 1-2 was their first three-game victory over a conference team since they took three from Connecticut in 1995. BC won an unprecedented doubleheader over St. John's (April 20), its first series win against the Red Storm since April 22-23, 1989. Most recently, Boston College swept Georgetown in a three-game series by a combined score of 48-10. In the second game alone, BC recorded six home runs.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, May 13 with a doubleheader at Pittsburgh. Game time is noon. The series determines the Eagles' seed for the tournament.
