Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Senior Chris Vicari hit a three-run homer and freshman Kimberly Ryan set a new BIG EAST record for strikeouts as the Boston College softball team clinched a BIG EAST Tournament berth with a sweep of Rutgers.
The Eagles (20-21, 9-7) won the first game, 1-0, before taking the nightcap, 4-1.
In the opener, Ryan fanned nine batters and pitched her way out of several tight spots to pick up the shutout. The Eagles, who had just two hits, scored the game's only run when Cara Blumfield reached on an error and then scored on another Rutgers miscue two batters later.
Vicari provided all of the necessary offense in game two, blasting her eighth homer of the season in the first inning. Summer Jarratt added a solo shot in the fifth inning.
Lauren Fischetti (5-9) picked up the win in the nightcap, tossing four shutout innings before giving way to Ryan. The freshman pitched the final three innings, fanning five more batters to set the BIG EAST record for most strikeouts in a season. Ryan finished with 106 strikeouts in league play, breaking the mark held by Eagle senior Mary Dietz (101).
Boston College will travel to UMass on Tuesday before coming home to host this weekend's BIG EAST Tournament. Boston College, seeded fourth, will open with regular-season champ Notre Dame, while #2 UConn will face #3 Villanova.
