New Haven, Conn. - The frustration continues for the Boston College softball team.
After having won six of their last seven games, the Eagles (17-17) were swept at Yale on Wednesday, dropping the first game, 6-5, and falling in the nightcap, 3-2. In both contests, Yale scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Of BC's 17 losses, 10 have been by one run.
In the opener, Boston College got a first-inning solo homer from Jennifer Asbury and a three-run second to take a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs came back to make it a 4-3 game after six innings, but the Eagles appeared to be in good shape after a Chris Vicari home run in the top of the seventh gave them a two-run cushion. Yale, however, came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning against reliever Brooke Shull to steal the win.
The second game began as a pitchers' duel between BC's Lauren Fischetti and Yale's Mariah Fike, with neither team scoring in the first five innings. The Eagles picked up a run in the top of the sixth when Lauren Fischetti reached on an error with the bases loaded to plate Anne Marie Ambros, but the Bulldogs came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Down 2-1 entering the seventh, Boston College got a one-out double from Jennifer Lombardi, who was lifted for pinch runner Jaclyn Woitkowski. After a wild pitch moved the runner to third, Cara Blumfield ripped a single to right to score Woitkowski. Again, however, Yale responded, scoring on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to win.
The Eagles will be at Providence on Thursday morning completing the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Friars. Boston College trailed, 4-0, when the game was suspended in the fourth inning.
