Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The struggles continued for the Boston College softball team, who fell to 4-11 after losing both ends of a home doubleheader to Syracuse.
The Eagles dropped the first game, 2-1, before suffering a 4-2 setback in the 11-inning nightcap.
In the front end of the twinbill, BC hurler Lauren Fischetti and Syracuse pitcher Tara DiMaggio dueled for four no-hit innings before the Orangewomen got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth.
The Eagles would answer, getting on the board with a solo homer by Chris Vicari in the bottom of the seventh. Gretchen Thompson singled to put the tying run aboard, but she would remain stranded at first.
DiMaggio gave up just three hits and struck out seven, while Fischetti (2-5) scattered four hits and struck out three in the loss.
In the nightcap, the Eagles came back from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game in the sixth. Cara Blumfield walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jaclyn Woitkowski. Jennifer Asbury then singled to the first base side of the infield and Blumfield scored on the throw.
The teams battled for four more scoreless innings before Syracuse chased BC starter Kimberly Ryan with three unearned runs in the top of the 11th. Once again, BC would rally.
Consecutive singles by Fischetti, Summer Jarratt, and Thompson plated one run and put runners on second and third with one out. With the winning run at the plate, however, DiMaggio came on in relief of Syracuse starter Missy Bieman and struck out the final two batters.
Boston College has lost eight one-run games and three extra-inning affairs. Ryan, who fell to 1-6, gave up four runs, all unearned. Brooke Shull finished the 11th for the Eagles.
On Monday, April 3, the Eagles will travel to Rhode Island for a doubleheader before coming home to face Holy Cross on Wednesday, April 5.
