CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) had two of Boston College's three hits as BC fell 8-0 to Seton Hall Sunday in Chestnut Hill. SHU Head Coach Mike Sheppard earned his 900th coaching victory, and the Pirates improved to 24-10 overall and 8-4 in the BIG EAST conference. The Eagles dropped to 24-13 and 6-9.
The Pirates' Jeff Miller was 3-for-5. Mike Bascom and Joe Cuervo each belted two hits while BC hurlers gave up home runs to Ray Navarrete and Alfie Critelli.
SHU's Damon Ponce de Leon went the distance, striking out two of the 30 batters he faced with no walks and three hits.
Jed Rogers (Westerly, R.I.) gave up six runs (four earned) on five hits through 4.2 innings. He was relieved by Mark and Andy Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.). Andy threw one hitless inning in the ninth.
Jarett Mendoza's (North Dighton, Mass.) double accounted for BC's other hit.
Navarrete hit a two-run home run off Rogers in the first inning to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Miller had an RBI single in the second then Cuervo plated two more runs later in that inning for the 5-0 SHU advantage where it stood until Casey Grimm's RBI single in the fifth inning. Critelli capped the scoring with his two-run home run in the sixth.
BC plays at Holy Cross Tuesday (April 18). Game time is 2 p.m.
