Uniondale, N.Y. - The Boston College softball team opened BIG EAST conference play with a doubleheader split at St. John's. The Eagles won the first game,6-1, before dropping the nightcap, 3-1.
In the first game, the Eagles got solo home runs in the third inning from Cara Blumfield, Anne Marie Ambros, and Chris Vicari to put the Red Storm away. All three had two hits in the game, as did freshman Jennifer Asbury.
Kimberly Ryan (4-6) gave up just one hit and one unearned run in the victory. The freshman struck out 10 while allowing just two walks in six innings.
Ryan was pressed into duty in the second game as well, as the hosts knocked BC starter Lauren Fischetti out of the game with a three-run first inning. Ryan would allow just one hit the rest of the way, but the Eagles could not mount a comeback. Summer Jarratt doubled Fischetti home in the second for the only BC run.
Ambros was the lone Eagle with two hits in the nightcap. Ryan struck out six batters in 5 2/3 innings of work.
The Eagles (8-13) will travel to Seton Hall for a doubleheader on Monday, April 10. The games were rained out on Sunday, April 9 and rescheduled.
