Boston College won the last game 11-1 of a three-game series with BIG EAST foe Notre Dame April 8 and 9. The Fighting Irishmen claimed the first two contests 12-1 and 10-6, respectively. BC is currently 18-11 overall and 5-7 in the conference. The Eagles host two doubleheaders this week, welcoming Albany Tuesday (April 11) and Vermont Wednesday (April 12). Both two-game competitions begin at 2 p.m.
Below are brief game highlights:
Game 1: The Eagles stranded 14 men to lose the first ND meeting of the 2000 season, 12-1 Saturday. Notre Dame's Jeff Perconte, Steve Stanley and Ken Meyer contributed three hits each to help a 16-hit offensive cause for the hosts. BC mustered 10 hits. Catcher Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) and second baseman Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) had two hits each while Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) went 3-for-4. Brendan Nolan (Swampscott, Mass.) recorded the loss (1-4) on the mound for the Eagles. His Notre Dame counterpart, J.P. Gagne, improved to 5-0, the first ND pitcher to open at 5-0 since 1996.
Game 2: BC scored three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but fell 10-6 to Notre Dame in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday. In the sixth inning, Mike Gambino scored a run on Neal McCarthy's (Warwick, R.I.) two-run single, then, in the last frame, sent a three-run shot over right field for his first home run of the 2000 season. The second baseman was 2-for-3 on the day. McCarthy also had two hits. Pitcher Erik Olson (Reading, Mass.) was tagged with the loss, dropping to 2-2 on the season. Two-time All-American Aaron Heilman earned the win in seven innings of work. Jeff Felker had three hits for Notre Dame, offensively.
Game 3: Steve Langone allowed no earned runs in his nine-inning, complete-game outing Sunday as the Eagles won 11-1. The senior ace surrendered nine hits, and struck out two while walking one. Gambino hit a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Catcher Chris Rosado (Stamford, Conn.) was 3-for-5. One of Mike Hubbard's (Braintree, Mass.) two hits was the game-winning RBI. Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) and Neal McCarthy also picked up a pair of hits for the Eagles. BC outhit the hosts 17-9.
