Boston, Mass. - Boston College fell just short in its bid for a third straight HOCKEY EAST Tournament title, as Niko Dimitrakos' goal with three seconds remaining in regulation lifted Maine to a 2-1 victory over the Eagles before a crowd of 15,993 at the FleetCenter.
Dimitrakos' goal capped a furious final minute in which both teams scored. Down by one goal with 40 seconds to play in the third period, Boston College (26-11-1) got a six-on-five goal from junior defenseman Bobby Allen to tie the score. Seniors Mike Mottau and Blake Bellefeuille, both of whom were named to the All-Tournament Team, assisted on the play.
Mottau's assist was the 127th of his career, tying David Emma's record for most assists at Boston College. Mottau is also the Eagles' all-time leader in games played.
Junior goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 33 saves for the Eagles. The loss was Clemmensen's first-ever defeat in the month of March.
Boston College will be in action next weekend in the NCAA Tournament. The date, site, and opponent will be revealed during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The show will be broadcast on ESPN2.
