BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Steve Langone's (Reading, Mass.) 13-strikeout performance was only upstaged by two great defensive plays and a stellar Florida Atlantic pitching effort as Boston College fell 1-0 to #24 FAU (Collegiate Baseball) Friday in Boca Raton.
The senior ace scattered four hits in eight innings with one walk. His previous 13-K performance came last season against West Virginia (May 15).
Dan Jackson started the game for the Owls. He retired nine BC hitters in eight innings with one walk. Nick Mattioni earned the save in one inning of work with one strikeout.
Neal McCarthy (Warwick, R.I.) was the Eagles' lone multiple-hitter with a 2-for-4 effort. Mike Hubbard (Braintree, Mass.), Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) and Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.) each tagged a hit for BC.
The Eagles first threatened in the sixth inning. Gambino drew Jackson's only walk of the game then stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. FAU's Alex Fernandez knocked down Mike Quirk's (Paxton, Mass.) bouncer up the middle to make a play at the plate and get Gambino out.
FAU answered in the bottom of that inning. Tommy Murphy doubled to knock in Gabe Somarriba, who was hit by a pitch.
BC put a man on in its final at bat. Langone reached base on an error. Then Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.) drove a ball to the gap in right center, which Somarriba made an over-the-head, diving catch at the warning track to save a run. Kealty advanced Langone to third but that is as far as BC got.
