Feb. 14, 2000
Boston, Mass. - Boston College fell short in its bid to end Boston University's Beanpot run, dropping the tournament's championship game, 4-1, before a crowd of 17,278 at the FleetCenter.
After a scoreless first period, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior forward Blake Bellefeuille at 3:42 of the second period. Marty Hughes and Brian Gionta assisted on the play.
The Terriers responded, however, tying the game up just 24 seconds later, and they would add goals at 7:11 and 19:43 of the second period to take the lead for good.
Freshman goaltender Tim Kelleher made 23 saves for the Eagles, who lost for the first time in seven games.
The Eagles will be in action again on Saturday, Feb. 19 when they travel to New Hampshire for the front end of a home-and-home series with the Wildcats.
BC Notes:
- The loss was the first for Boston College in six Valentine's Day Beanpot contests. BC won its last Beanpot on Valentine's Day in 1994.
- Boston College stopped BU on all six of its power-play chances. The Eagles have now killed 34 straight penalties dating back to their Jan. 28 win at Maine.
- Senior Jeff Farkas and sophomore Brooks Orpik were given game disqualification penalties with 2:24 remaining in the third period. Both players will miss Saturday's game at UNH.
- Kelleher, who came into the game with a 1.74 GAA, had not allowed more than two goals in a game since a 6-5 loss to Northeastern on Nov. 12, 1999.
