DETROIT - Michigan State scored four unanswered goals to defeat Boston College 4-1 in the first round of the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena.
Boston College would get on the board first, thanks to a 4-on-4 goal from sophomore forward Krys Kolanos at 19:38 of the first period. Junior forward Brooks Orpik assisted on the goal.
The Spartans opened the second frame aggressively, outshooting the Eagles 14-8 in the period and scoring two goals. MSU would get a goal from junior Andrew Hutchinson and a power-play goal from senior Rustyn Dolyny to go up 2-1 after two periods.
Dolyny tallied his second goal of the game at 10:01 of the final period, putting the Spartans up 3-1. Dolyny would finish the game with two goals and two assists. Senior Damon Whitten would score the fourth Michigan State goal to put the game out of reach with 3:04 remaining.
Senior goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 27 saves for the Eagles. MSU's Ryan Miller turned away 26 shots for the victory.
Michigan State (13-1-4) advances to the championship game of the Great Lakes Invitational against the winner of the Michigan/Michigan Tech game.
Boston College (12-4-1) returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 30, in the consolation game of the GLI, facing either Michigan or Michigan Tech. Game time is 4 p.m. EST.
