Men's Soccer Earns Trip to BIG EAST Semifinals

Junior Chris Cleary scored the game-winner in overtime off a cross from senior Sjur Gundersen to send the Boston College men's soccer team to its first BIG EAST Championship semifinal since 1995. The third-seeded Eagles defeated the sixth-seeded Georgetown Hoyas, 2-1, to earn a trip to the league championships.
Boston College opened the scoring when sophomore Bobby Thompson scored his third goal in three games off a header from sophomore Casey Schmidt in the 29th minute. Adam Pfeifer also assisted on the goal.
Fifteen seconds into the second half, in the 46th minute, Georgetown made it a new game when Kenny Owens netted a feed from Tony Soric to even the score at 1-1.
Cleary's score in the 102nd minute locked up the Eagles' place in the annual league championships. His goal was the fifth of the season to give him a new career high.
Senior keeper Chris Hamblin made four saves for his ninth win of the season. Hoya netminder Brian O'Hagan made seven saves in the loss.
Boston College next faces the winner of the St. John's/Rutgers quarterfinal match-up next Friday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m.
