CHESTNUT HILL - Two high schools seniors have signed national letters of intent to play men's basketball at Boston College next season, according to an announcement made by Eagles' head coach Al Skinner.
Jermaine Watson, a 6-foot-3-inch guard from Tabor (Mass.) Academy, and Kirsten Zoellmer, a 7-foot-1-inch center from Hanover, Germany, will enter Boston College in the fall of 2001 and begin their collegiate playing careers in the 2001-02 season.
Watson, who resides in Dorchester, Mass., averaged 23.0 points and 6.0 assists as a junior at Tabor Academy in 1999-2000. He earned all-New England honors.
"We're very excited about Jermaine. He'll give us a big guard who can defend and really create on the offensive end," Skinner says. "We're always excited to get one of the better local players."
Zoellmer played the 1999-2000 season for the Hanover club team in the second division of the German Club League. He averaged 16.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 7.0 blocked shots per game. Zoellmer attends the Integrated School of Hanover/Linden.
"Kirsten has a tremendous future. He's blessed with good hands and good interior scoring ability," Skinner says. "His biggest adjustment will be playing the game in transition, but he's a very hard worker. I believe he'll have a real impact on our program by the time his career is over."
Boston College, which will lose three scholarship players to graduation following the 2000-01 season, opens its regular season on Sunday, November 19, against St. Peter's at 2 p.m.
