The West Virginia men's soccer team entered tonight's contest without a win in BIG EAST Conference play in 2000 and came away with its first two points of the season by virtue of its 2-0 win over the visiting Boston College Eagles. Boston College applied heavy pressure several times during the game, but the Mountaineers capitalized on two late-game goals to put the game out of reach.
In the 74th minute, Chris Renner broke the stalemate and put in Robert Rice's cross for a Mountaineer 1-0 lead. Jon Scragg added the insurance goal in the 85th minute to put the game out of reach. Despite out-shooting West Virginia 18-11 and out-cornering them 10-4, Boston College was unable to come away with the win.
Boston College initially opened the season with a 4-1 record but has lost four out of its last five games for a .500 mark on the season at 5-5.
The Eagles will next face second-ranked Connecticut on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Fields.
