Sophomore Bobby Thompson scored his second game-winning goal in two games on a hooking shot past Brown keeper Peter Mahoney in the 67th minute to secure the team's third-consecutive 1-0 win. Seniors Brian Mollo and Martin Cantillo both assisted on the goal as the team celebrated Senior Day in a brief ceremony before the game. The team continued its outstanding defensive play this season that has seen the team ranked among the nation's leaders.
With a starting lineup that included ten of the 11 seniors on the Boston College roster, the Eagles took control of the play early and continued to pressure the Bears the whole game. Freshman Adam Pfeifer made several strong rushes and appeared to score his first career goal with :03 left in the first half, but the referee waived off the apparent score citing Pfeifer was offside after he collected a deflected pass.
Three goalkeepers combined for the Eagles' eighth shutout of the season. Senior Tim O'Halloran started the game and played the first 24:00 for his first action of the season. He made two saves. Senior Chris Hamblin came in and relieved O'Halloran. He made four saves in his 21:00 of time. Sophomore Danny Caruso played the entire second half and picked up the win with three saves.
In the NCAA statistics released on Oct. 31, the Eagles are ranked ninth nationally in team goals against with a .76 average and tied for 17th nationally with .467 shutouts per game ratio (seven shutouts in 17 games through Oct. 29).
With the win, Boston College improved to 9-6-1 overall. The Eagles finished the BIG EAST season with a 7-3-1 record and a third-place finish in the league. Boston College was selected ninth in the Preseason BIG EAST Coaches' Poll. Brown fell to 9-5-1 with the loss.
The Eagles' next game will be a BIG EAST quarterfinal match against Georgetown on Sunday, Nov. 5, at noon at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. The game marks Boston College's first trip to the annual league tournament since 1997.
