Hockey Defeats UMass-Amherst, 9-5

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore forward Krys Kolanos and senior defenseman Bobby Allen each scored two goals to lead Boston College to a 9-5 HOCKEY EAST win over UMass-Amherst before a crowd of 4,262 fans at Kelley Rink.
Kolanos added three assists to finish with five points, while Allen tallied one assist. BC senior captain Brian Gionta and freshman defenseman J.D. Forrest each registered one goal and two assists to finish with three points.
Boston College's special-teams units played a key role in the victory. The Eagles scored on 5-of-12 power-play chances, while successfully killing all nine of UMass-Amherst's power-play opportunities. BC also scored one shorthanded goal.
Boston College (5-1-0) led 4-2 after one period, and 6-5 after two periods, before scoring three unanswered goals in the final stanza.
Junior forward Darcy King led the UMass-Amherst (1-3-1) attack with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Brad Nizwantowski and senior Kris Wallis each recorded one goal and two assists for the Minutemen.
Both teams used two goaltenders. BC sophomore Tim Kelleher made 12 saves in 33:57 (four goals allowed), before senior Scott Clemmensen made seven stops in the final 26:03. UMass-Amherst senior Markus Helanen made 18 saves in 31:45 (five goals allowed), before junior Mike Johnson made 25 saves in 28:15.
The game featured 35 penalties -- 18 on UMass-Amherst, 17 on Boston College.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, November 3 against Northeastern. Game time is 7 p.m. in Kelley Rink.
