Guiney Leads Women's Cross Country to Win BIG EAST

BOSTON-Sophomore Maggie Guiney (Red Bank, N.J.) finished second out of 114 runners to lead the Boston College women's country team to a first place finish at the BIG EAST Championships, held today to Franklin Park, Boston.
In the win, the Eagles used five runners in the top 15 to capture the win in the 5k race. M. Guiney, who has lead her teammates in three races previously this season, finished with a time of 17:03, her personal best time. Next the Eagles took the sixth, seventh and eighth places. In sixth with a time of 17:25 was sophomore Laura Smith (Holden, Mass.). Shortly following in seventh was senior captain Katie Ryan (Elmira, N.Y.) with 17:31. Two seconds (17:33) later sophomore Cate Guiney (Red Bank, N.J.) finished in eighth place. Rounding out the medal winners, freshman Jennifer Kramer finished in 15th with a time of 17:40.
Also helping the Eagles capture the win were: sophomore Julie Spoledoro (Duxbury, Mass.) in 25th (18:01), junior Sharon Van Tuyl (Portage, Mich.) in 27th (18:07), freshman Jennifer Donovan (Melville, N.Y.) in 43rd (18:31) and senior captain Lisa McIssac (Alberta, Canada) in 76th (19:29). Winning the race was Ann McGranahan for Villinova.
The BIG EAST Championship win is the first for the women's cross country team since Boston College won in 1985, at a meet that was also held at Boston's Franklin Park.
The 7th nationally ranked women's cross country team will return to action when they travel to Van Courtland Park, Bronx, N.Y. to participate in the NCAA District I Qualifier on Saturday, Nov. 11. The meet is schedule to begin at 11:00 a.m.
