CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Boston College running back Cedric Washington has been named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Washington (Holyoke, Mass.) rushed for a career-high 177 yards and three touchdowns in the Eagles' 30-29 overtime win over Baylor on Saturday. The junior running back had the go-ahead score in overtime to put BC ahead 30-23.
His game yardage represented four more yards than his entire season total from 1998. He had 32 carries against Baylor, averaging 5.5 yards. It is the second straight year that a Boston College running back has won Offensive Player of the Week to open the season. Former Eagle standout Mike Cloud captured the honor after BC's win over Georgia Tech in the first week of 1998.
Pittsburgh defensive back Mark Ponko was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while Shayne Graham of Virginia Tech captured Special Teams Player of the Week.
