NEWTON, Mass. - Boston College and Boston University played to a 3-3 double overtime tie in men?s soccer action Tuesday at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Jorgen Lie (Kristianund, Norway). Lie scored his second goal of the season on assists by freshmen Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Bobby Thompson (Framingham, Mass.) less than 11 minutes into the game to put Boston College into the lead.
The Terriers tied matters up at one on Frank Vigliotti?s goal 3:12 into the second half. The Eagles wasted little time re-gaining the momentum as Schmidt put the ball into an open Boston University net to give his team the lead.
Eleven minutes later, Schmidt scored on an identical play, with Boston University freshman netminder Matthew Smith straying away from the goalmouth.
Less than a minute after Schmidt?s tally, the Terriers struck back as Matt McManus beat Eagle goalkeeper Chris Hamblin (Bristol, England). The game would become tied at the 69:15 mark as Boston University?s Kirk Miller tallied a penalty kick.
The teams played to a stalemate the rest of the way with Boston College failing to capitalize on a pair of prime scoring opportunities at the end of regulation and midway through the first overtime.
Boston College, which held a 13-12 shot advantage on the afternoon, will return to action Sunday in a 2 p.m. game at BIG EAST-rival Georgetown.
