NORTHEASTERN (1-2, 0-2)
The Series
Saturday's game will mark only the fourth time the two schools have
played, the first since 1938. All the games in the series have been
played in Alumni Stadium, and BC has won all three. In those three
games, Northeastern has scored a total of eight points vs. the Eagles.
The Coaches
Boston College's Tom O'Brien is 11-14 as head coach of the Eagles and
overall...A three-year starter at defensive end from 1968-70 at the
U.S. Naval Academy, he was named BC's 32nd head football coach after
15 years on the staff of the University of Virginia, the last six as
coordinator of UVA's record-setting offense. O'Brien also was an
assistant at Navy for seven years.
Boston College graduate Barry Gallup ('69) is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies, where he has compiled a 37-53-1 record. His 1997 squad finished 8-3, earning him New England Coach of the Year honors. Gallup entered Boston College in 1965 and went on to become the greatest receiver in school history before graduating in 1969 and embarking on a 20-year coaching career with the Eagles. As an assistant first to Joe Yukica and then to Ed Chlebek, and finally to Jack Bicknell, Gallup established himself as a top recruiter and football strategist. He was instrumental in recruiting some of the nation's most talented players to BC, including Doug Flutie. Another member of the Northeastern coaching staff, defensive assistant Bill Thomas, is a 1972 BC graduate who was the top draft pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 1972.

Eagles Prepare For Neighborhood Brawl
The Boston College Eagles hope to get off to their best start since
1992, when they began with a 7-0-1 mark, when they take on Northeastern
this Saturday. The Eagles opened their BIG EAST schedule in style this
past Saturday with a 27-7 road win over Rutgers. Tim Hasselbeck
completed 17-of-22 passes for 168 yards, one TD and no interceptions as
the Eagles amassed 427 yards of offense. Cedric Washington carried 21
times for 147 yards and two touchdowns on the day. Defensively, the
Eagles intercepted three Mike McMahon passes, led by Jonathan Ordway,
who picked off two. The BC defense also held Rutgers to 98 yards on
the ground.
A Look At The Season So Far:
In an exciting season opener, Baylor's Kyle Atteberry missed an extra
point in overtime and Boston College, behind Cedric Washington's 177
yards rushing and three touchdowns, beat Baylor 30-29 in Alumni
Stadium. On Boston College's overtime possession, Washington scored on
a 1-yard run and John Matich kicked the extra point. Baylor then scored
on a 1-yard run by Jermaine Alfred. Atteberry, who missed a long
extra-point attempt after Baylor was penalized for excessive
celebration following a second-quarter touchdown, pulled his kick to
the left.
After a week off, linebacker Frank Chamberlin led an aggressive defensive attack (11 tackles, 9 solo, one sack) as the Eagles defeated Navy, 14-10, in Annapolis. Junior quarterback Tim Hasselbeck completed 16-of-25 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles dominated time of possession 34:52 to 25:08 in that game.
Northeastern Notes
Northeastern comes to Chestnut Hill following a 42-30 loss to William &
Mary at Parsons Field. Despite the loss, the Huskies racked up 561
yards in total offense on the day. Northeastern's Jason Quinlan
completed 27 of 48 passes for 348 yards and three touchdowns in that
game. Quinlan completed passes to seven different receivers in that
contest.
The Huskies began their season with a 44-7 win over AIC before suffering a 29-21 loss at James Madison in their Atlantic 10 opener. Gallup's team features veterans on both sides of the ball to complement some young talent, especially at linebacker. Redshirt freshman Steve Anzalone leads the team in tackles, while another redshirt freshman, Joe Gazzola, had an outstanding day vs. JMU, registering an interception, a fumble recovery and a sack. The secondary is also a featured part of the defense with strong safety Jabari Powell and top returning tackler Brian Whitman at free safety. On offense, the Huskies have talent at the skill positions, led by Dave Klemic at wideout. After breaking NU's single-season scoring record last year, Klemic is off to a fine start in the 1999 season, including seven catches for 125 yards at JMU.
Gallup's BC Ties
Northeastern's Barry Gallup was a two-sport star at BC. In football
(1965-68), he set school marks for receptions (87) and receiving yards
(1325) - Mel Briggs eclipsed both of the records in 1973. Gallup had
735 yards and established the season record for catches (46) as a
senior (the record was eventually broken by Gallup protege Brian
Brennan in 1983). He also played two years of college basketball for
legendary former Boston Celtic bob Cousy. Gallup starred on the
football field at Swampscott High for legendary coach Stan
Bondelevitch, earning All-America honors as a senior. He is a member
of the BC Varsity Club Hall of Fame.
Family Ties
Northeastern junior fullback Matt Comella is the brother of BC freshman
fullback J.P. Comella...Northeastern junior defensive tackle Rich
Parenteau is the brother of BC freshman offensive lineman Mark
Parenteau (Pompano Beach, Fla.).
Red Zone Rundown

Coach Tom O'Brien has been pleased with his team's ball control, and for good reason. Boston College has controlled the time of possession category, holding on to the ball for 33:12 to 27:28 for its opponents. BC leads the BIG EAST in that catetgory.
