CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - BC freshman Matt Duffey earned the Sears Excellence Award at the AAU 18-and-under National Baseball Championship in Disney's Wide World of Sports complex near Orlando. The honor recognizes and commemorates young athletes from across the country for excelling in athletics while flourishing in academics and community service.
Duffey, a pitcher and utility player, led the San Antonio Trojans to a fifth-place finish at the national championship. Prior to the 1999 summer tournament, Duffey was a two-time Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) All-State pitcher at Central High School where he also merited All-State quarterback honors for the football team. In his free time, Duffey volunteered at local schools by helping teachers and interacting with younger students. He graduated seventh in his class of 106 and is currently attending the Heights on an academic and athletic (baseball) scholarship.
The Sears Recognition Series kicked off June 9 and continued throughout the summer. At each of 23 national tournaments, one outstanding young athlete was selected as the tournament recipient. In addition, both a male and female winner were chosen at the four coed tournaments.
