Powered by three first-half goals, Providence downed homestanding Boston College, 3-1 in men's soccer action played at the Brooks School in North Andover, Mass. The game was the season opener for both squads.
The Friars wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, registering in the match's seventh minute on a goal by junior Kevin Jones. Providence scored its next two goals less than three minutes apart on tallies from Kempes Corbally and Michael Eisenhut.
The Eagles' Jorgen Lie (Kristiainund, Norway), playing in his first game for Boston College after transferring from Geneva (Penn.) College put the ball past Providence goalkeeper Danny Glynn in the match's 63rd minute to get his team in the scoring column. Junior forward Kevin Boyd (Del Mar, Calif.), an active force on the field all afternoon, assisted Lie's goal.
The Eagles, opening their season against a BIG EAST opponent for the first time in Coach Ed Kelly's 12-year tenure, outshot their visitors 14-11, with junior forward Chris Cleary (Milton, Mass.) launching five shots towards the Providence goal.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they travel to South Bend, Ind. for a clash with BIG EAST rival Notre Dame. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. local time.
