CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior running back Carlton Rowe carried the ball 11 times for 72 yards in Boston College's first preseason football scrimmage Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. Freshman running back William Green also gained 72 yards on the day. Green carried the ball 12 times, including a 32-yard scamper that resulted in the only touchdown of the day.
Junior Tim Hasselbeck, tabbed by BC Head Coach Tom O'Brien as the starter for the Sept. 4 opener vs. Baylor, completed 14 of 26 passes for 99 yards. Redshirt freshman Brian St. Pierre completed 14 of 24 passes for 70 yards. Sophomore Dedrick Dewalt led all receivers with six catches for 51 yards.
Senior placekicker John Matich connected on field goals of 30, 33, 39 (twice), 40, 41 and 46 yards.
"I was pleased with our effort today," O'Brien said. "We had good effort out of a lot of people, but our execution was not very good. Right now we have to become a much more mentally tough football team or it's going to be a long season for us. We have a long way to go, and I think this football team understands that. Hopefully this is just a start and we can build upon this in practice to get ready to play Baylor in two weeks."
O'Brien also announced that freshman wide receiver Chris Barnes (6-1, 195, Baltimore, Md.) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (left knee) during the first week of practice and will miss the entire season. Also during the first week of fall drills, freshman quarterback J.D. Schmidt (6-4, 226, McLean, Va.) suffered a concussion and sophomore offensive lineman Matt Knapp (6-6, 320, Stony Brook, N.Y.) complained of severe headaches. Both are being monitored by the BC Sports Medicine staff and will be re-evaluated.
