CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- Boston College head softball coach Jennifer Finley was named the 1998 BIG EAST Coach of the Year. Finley was voted Coach of the Year by the leagues head coaches after leading the Eagles to a 38-12-1 record, a BIG EAST North Division title, and their second consecutive BIG EAST Tournament championship this season. The Eagles earned the conferences automatic bid to the NCAA Championship that begins on May 15.
This years BIG EAST title was the second for Boston College and the third for Finley. Prior to her arrival at Boston College, she led Providence College to the 1994 BIG EAST Tournament Championship. In two seasons as the head coach at Providence, she led the Lady Friars to two ECAC championships and one BIG EAST title.
Finley registered her 100th victory as the head coach at Boston College on May 2, when the Eagles defeated Rutgers, 1-0, in the first game of the BIG EAST Tournament. In three seasons with the Eagles, she has registered a 102-46-1 record. Finleys career record is 178-83-1 in five seasons. On April 24, 1996, Finley recorded her 100th career victory as Boston College defeated Providence, 6-0.
In 1998, the Eagles broke the school record for wins in a season (38), improving upon last years 36 victories. A year ago, Finley led Boston College to a 36-13 overall record, which was the previous season-high for victories. In each of the 1997 and 1998 seasons, Boston College recorded 13 BIG EAST wins, which were the most league victories in school history.
