NCAA Recommends Boston College as Tournament Host

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee has selected Boston as one of the sites it will recommend for the first- and second-round games of the 2003 men's basketball championships, with Boston College as the host institution. The NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet will act on the committee's recommendations for the 2002 and 2003 sites when it meets in early February.
Boston College also will host the first- and second-round games in the East Region on March 12-14, 1999.
"We are extremely proud that the committee has recommended the city of Boston, the FleetCenter and Boston College to host this event," says BC Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo. "This is a result of a great team effort by officials at Boston College, the FleetCenter, and the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors' Bureau. This is great news for sports fans in Boston and all of New England."
The sites recommended for the preliminary rounds of the 2002 championship are:
EAST REGION (First and Second Rounds) Pittsburgh Civic Arena, Pittsburgh, Pa., Duquesne University, host; MCI Center, Washington, D.C., Georgetown University, host; (Regional) Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y., Syracuse University, host.
SOUTH REGION (First and Second Rounds) Bi-Lo Center, Greenville, S.C., Southern Conference and Furman University, host; TWA Dome, St. Louis, Mo., Missouri Valley Conference, host; (Regional) Rupp Arena, Lexington, Ky., University of Kentucky, host.
MIDWEST REGION: (First and Second Rounds) United Center, Chicago, Ill., Big Ten Conference, host; Kemper Arena, Kansas City, Mo., Big 12 Conference, host; (Regional) Kohl Center, Madison, Wis., University of Wisconsin, host.
WEST REGION: (First and Second Rounds) University Arena, Albuquerque, N.M., University of New Mexico, host; ARCO Arena, Sacramento, Calif., University of the Pacific, host; (Regional) San Jose Arena, San Jose, Calif., Santa Clara University, host.

SOUTH REGION: (First and Second Rounds): Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, Birmingham, Ala., Southeastern Conference, host; Nashville Are, Nashville, Tenn., Vanderbilt University, host; (Regional): Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas, University of Texas at San Antonio, host.
MIDWEST REGION: (First and Second Round) Reunion Arena, Dallas, Texas, Big 12 Conference, host; RCA Dome, Indianapolis, Ind., Midwestern Collegiate Conference and Butler University, host; (Regional) Metrodome, Minneapolis, Minn., University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, host.
WEST REGION: (First and Second Rounds) Jon M. Huntsman Center, Salt Lake City, Utah, University of Utah, host; Spokane Arena, Spokane, Wash., Washington State University, host; (Regional) Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, Anaheim, Calif, Big West Conference, host.
Atlanta, Ga. (Georgia Dome) and New Orleans, La. (Louisiana Superdome) will host the 2002 and 2003 Final Fours, respectively.
