MIAMI (AP) - Tim James and junior college transfer Kevin Houston scored 19 points each to lead the Hurricanes to a 77-64 victory over Boston College Tuesday night.
The Eagles (2-5, 0-2), returning one starter from last year's 15-16 team, have dropped three straight, while Miami (3-2, 1-0), won its second straight Big East opener and defeated BC at Miami Arena for the first time since 1995.
The young Boston College team was led by freshmen Clinton Sims and Kenny Walls, who scored 19 and 16 points respectively.
Miami's Mario Bland, who sat out the first half with a sore knee, chipped in 10 points and five rebounds in the second half, including five key points down the stretch.
Miami made just 19 of 37 free throws, but forced BC into 27 turnovers.
Miami led 58-54 before Houston ignited a 7-0 run. He sank a baseline jumper and James, who had eight rebounds, followed with a layup. Bland then scored and added a free throw for a three-point play and a 65-54 lead with 6:12 left.
Boston College cut the lead to 69-64 on Willie Deane's basket, but James dropped in a layup and then blocked a shot to secure the victory.
Miami led 36-35 at halftime. The Eagles scored the first five points of the second half before the Hurricanes reeled off a 16-2 run to go up 52-42 with 12:28 left. Houston scored six points during the burst.
