CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College sophomore Scott Clemmensen made 26 saves to record his first shutout of the season - fifth shutout of his career - to lead the Eagles to a 5-0 win over UMass-Lowell in the opening game of the HOCKEY EAST quarterfinal round.
BC sophomore Brian Gionta tallied two goals and one assist, while juniors Jeff Farkas and Blake Bellefeuille each notched one goal and one assist, leading the Eagles to a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three series.
Farkas opened the scoring with his 28th goal of the season, at 9:44 of the first period. Farkas collected a perfect pass from sophomore Rob Scuderi and finished a breakaway with a shot over the shoulder of UMass-Lowell goalie Scott Fankhouser.
Gionta netted the next two goals to give BC a 3-0 lead. His first goal - on the power play -- came six minutes after the Farkas tally. At 11:48 of the second period, Gionta tallied a short-handed goal after stealing the puck at UMass-Lowells blue line.
The Eagles (22-11-4) capitalized on a five-on-three opportunity when Bellefeuille collected his own rebound and scored. Gionta and Farkas assisted on the goal. Freshman Jeff Giuliano finished the scoring with his breakaway goal at 11:41 of the third period.
UMass-Lowells Fankhouser made 10 saves in 32:25 before being replaced by Jimi St. John who made 12 stops. The River Hawks (17-18-0) were outshot, 27-26.
The Eagles and the River Hawks will play in game two of the HOCKEY EAST quarterfinal round tomorrow night. Game time is 7 p.m. in Kelley Rink.
