CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The battle for the starting quarterback position between juniors Tim Hasselbeck and Dave Robbins and redshirt freshman Brian St. Pierre will highlight Saturday's Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Football Game at Boston College's Alumni Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
The three quarterback prospects have shared snaps in each of two scrimmages during spring drills, which began March 25 and culminate with Saturday's game. In the first scrimmage, Hasselbeck completed 9 of 13 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown, St. Pierre completed 8 of 17 passes for 94 yards and rushed for an 18-yard touchdown, and Robbins went 3-7 for 58 yards. In the second scrimmage, this past Saturday, Hasselbeck completed 14 of 24 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns. The 6-1 junior from Norfolk, Mass., connected with wide receiver Dedrick Dewalt on touchdown throws of 12 and 54 yards.
The game also will give fans a look at the BC defense, which returns nine starters from last year's squad, including pre-season All-America candidate Chris Hovan at nose guard.
The Eagles return 51 lettermen, including 13 starters, from last year's 4-7 squad. They will be joined by a recruiting class hailed by many as one of the top 15 in the nation. The team opens the 1999 season with a Sept. 4 matchup vs. Baylor.
