MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Big East rushing leader Mike Cloud won his personal showdown with Amos Zereoue, but West Virginia still ran away from Boston College.
Zereoue rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns while Marc Bulger threw for two more scores as West Virginia beat Boston College 35-10 Saturday.
Cloud, a senior who rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns against West Virginia last year in a comeback victory, had 179 yards on 28 carries Saturday.
Zereoue had 137 yards rushing before halftime, including a season-high 101 yards in the first quarter. His 47-yard TD to open the scoring in the first quarter was his longest run this year.
It appeared that Boston College had figured out Zereoue in the second quarter, holding him to 2 yards on six carries.
Not quite.
Zereoue went 30 yards up the middle for his second score just over two minutes before halftime for a 19-7 lead.
Cloud also had a hot start, scoring from 21 yards out in the second quarter and amassing 111 yards in the first half.
Cloud, who broke Zereoue's year-old Big East season rushing record last week at Pittsburgh, finished the season with 1,726 yards. His 3,597 career yards surpassed Troy Stradford (3,504 yards from 1982-86) as Boston College's career rushing leader.
And Cloud took over the Big East career rushing lead from Zereoue, a junior, who has 3,569 yards with one game left next Friday at Pittsburgh.
When Zereoue sputtered to start the third quarter, West Virginia turned to its passing game.
Bulger threw for 91 yards on West Virginia's second possession of the second half, ending in a 31-yard scoring pass to freshman Antonio Brown.
Then he finished off BC with a 14-play, 80-yard drive that ate 6:50 off the clock, capped by his 10-yard TD toss to Shawn Foreman early in the fourth quarter.
Bulger became West Virginia's single-season passing leader. He has 2,769 yards passing, breaking the mark of 2,496 set by Bernie Galiffa in 1972.
He has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 13 consecutive games.
