PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore Steve Langone scattered nine hits and did not allow an earned run in nine innings to lead Boston College to a 3-1 BIG EAST win over Providence at Hendricken Field.
Langone, who also scored one run, allowed more than one hit in only one inning -- the eighth. He began that inning by fanning the Friars' ninth batter, then made a spectacular play to retire PC's leadoff hitter, Jay Hairston. Hairston placed a perfect bunt down the third-base line, but a charging Langone barehanded the ball, spun and, in the same motion, fired a strike to Sean McGowan at first base that beat the runner by a half-step. The next three PC batters singled, before Langone got out of the inning by striking out Keith Reed with the bases loaded.
The sophomore registered seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter. He has now thrown six complete games in seven starts. He has a 3-4 record and a 3.38 earned run average.
McGowan, a junior, was the Eagles' offensive star, scoring two runs and driving in the other. He hit his 11th home run of the season to give BC a 1-0 lead in the second inning. One inning later, Langone stroked a two-out single, and scored on McGowan's subsequent double. Senior left fielder Chang Choe's single plated McGowan with the Eagles' final run.
PC scored its only run in the fourth inning. One hit and one BC error allowed the unearned run.
PC's Mark Desroches took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings.
